Prepare the way - #002

Welcome to The Wind & Word—a daily devotional where the Spirit of God breathes life through the Word of God. Today, take a moment to slow down, open your heart, and allow Him to speak.

Mark 1:1-3 - The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God, 2as it is written in Isaiah the prophet: “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way, a voice of one calling in the wilderness, Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.”

In the opening lines of Gospel of Mark 1:1–3, we are immediately introduced to the “beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” There is no slow buildup—Mark launches straight into the good news. He anchors this message in prophecy, pointing back to Book of Isaiah, where a voice cries out in the wilderness, calling people to prepare the way for the Lord. This reminds us that God’s plan of redemption was not random or reactive; it was intentional, foretold, and perfectly timed. Before Jesus steps onto the scene, God sends a messenger to prepare hearts, showing that spiritual readiness matters.

The imagery of “preparing the way” paints a powerful picture. In ancient times, roads would be cleared and made straight before a king’s arrival. Spiritually, this means removing obstacles—repentance, humility, and surrender—so that Christ can fully enter and reign in our lives. The wilderness mentioned here is not just a physical place but often reflects the condition of the human heart: dry, distracted, or distant. Yet it is precisely in those places that God speaks and calls us closer. He meets us where we are, but He loves us enough to call us to transformation.

Application:
Take time to examine your heart—what might be in the way of Jesus having full access? It could be sin, distraction, pride, or even busyness. Just as the messenger called people to prepare, we are called to intentionally make room for Christ daily. Spend time in prayer, confession, and the Word, asking God to “straighten the paths” in your life. When you prepare the way, you position yourself not just to hear from God, but to walk closely with Him in every area of your life.

Start alive in Him. Stay alive in Him.
